Employment Search
For this task I have conducted research into the current job market, looking at potential vacancies in areas I take interest in when thinking about my future career path. I looked into suitable media companies, such as ITV and BBC, analysing each role and breaking apart what skills are needed, and further action that may be needed when going for the role - travel, etc.
The first job role I looked into was a Journalism Researcher role at the BBC. I decided to look into this role as the requirements are that you should be passionate for working on podcasts, which I think is something which could interest me now and in my future. As well as this, having researched into the company and seeing the content previously produced, the BBC have a large selection of podcasts which take my interest so that I am already passionate for the subject. I looked into what the role's responsibilities are, and they include:
- A combination of regional knowledge, newswriting and research skills
- Preparing background information
- Creating products in a range of formats in collaboration with other BBC Journalists.
The skills needed include:
- Demonstrate examples of strong people skills and the ability to adapt communication style to suit a range of relationships
- Experience of researching complex subjects
- Being able to work independently and as part of a team
In saying this, this role is set in London, so a change in location would be necessary.
Secondly, I looked into a Publicist role at Channel 4, which is to develop, implement and manage creative targeted publicity campaigns that generate conversations and drive audience viewing to Channel 4's programmes and content. This role will manage campaigns for a range of programmes with particular focus on promoting scripted content across our drama, comedy, and acquisition slates.
Skills and Experience needed:
- A track record of developing and implementing proactive, creative and innovative consumer PR strategies and campaigns
- A comprehensive understanding of PR
- Outstanding communication skills
- Record of managing press, logistical and resource issues
Key Responsibilities:
- Identify and manage issues arising out of Channel 4 projects
- Write and create all press materials
- Provide written reports and critical evaluation of priority programme campaigns
Again, like a lot of large media roles, this job role take space in London, so again a location change would be needed.
Lastly I researched into the role of a Production Journalist at ITV. In this role you would have a key role in finding and developing stories for television and online platforms. You'll have first class written and verbal communications skills and be able to develop good working relationships. You will also demonstrate good editorial judgement and use your social media skills for newsgathering and analysis. Unlike the previous two roles, this job is set in the Northeast so a location change would not be necessary.
The minimum criteria for this role is:
- Having knowledge of media law and compliance
- Knowledge of ITV Tyne Tees and the stories and areas of interest for the many communities included
- A strong journalistic curiosity and good command of language
While the key criteria is:
- Having an ability to think about a task or problem in a new or different way using imagination to generate new ideas and to solve complex problems
- The ability to bring a different perspective and point of difference
- Ability to work successfully and positively, as part of a team
- Have a fresh and engaging approach to digital output.
